TL;DR: In real 2026 moving sales, a plain work desk sold for $25 and flat-pack bookcases for $10 to $25. Pieces with a reason to pay more held value: a branded standing desk sold at $250, a vintage secretary at $350 and a premium-retailer bookcase at $175.
Home office furniture is where sellers get the biggest surprise. You paid real money for that desk, and a buyer offers you $25.
The reason is that most desks and bookcases are cheap to buy new and easy to replace. The ones that hold value have something a new flat-pack piece doesn't.

What holds value
Standing desks. The branded standing desk sold at $250. Buyers know a new one costs several times that, so a fair used price looks like a deal.
Vintage pieces with character. A painted secretary desk with a glass hutch sold at $350, above its suggested range. Nobody can order that one new.
Premium retailers, in good condition. The premium-retailer bookcase sold at $175. A set of four IKEA Billy bookcases at $200 didn't, even though it was more shelving.
What doesn't
Plain desks and flat-pack shelves sold for $10 to $25 here, and a $40 basic study desk was still waiting. A new one can be delivered for little more, so a used one has to be priced well below that.
Overpriced vintage. A second, larger vintage secretary was listed at $850, above its suggested range of $500 to $750, and was still waiting. Vintage sells, but only near a fair number.
How to price yours
- Ask what's special about it. A brand, solid wood, a standing mechanism or a vintage design. If the answer is nothing, price it low.
- Give the measurements. Width, depth and height, plus the height range for a standing desk.
- Say how it comes apart. Buyers want to know if it fits in a car.
- Sell the chair with the desk if you can. A set is easier to sell than a bare desk.
- Price to beat new for anything that's still sold new.
